	thatpoetchick says: 05/13/2007	When I was in college I could speak and write in Spanish so fluently, I tested out of the foreign-language requirement at my university. Over the years, though, I have lost SO much of my vocabulary & have the same problem lifedancer04 mentioned about not being able to use past tense verbs. It gets so frustrating! There are a couple of things I do to try to enhance my Spanish-speaking skills -- or at least keep them from getting any worse. Sometimes I buy Spanish-language celebrity or women's magazines, take them home and read them, and if there are words I don't recognize I write them down and look them up in a Spanish-English dictionary. It's also helpful to use the Spanish subtitles on DVDs, especially with movies I've seen a dozen times where I don't have to concentrate on the plot so much and can read along with what the actors are saying.
	MrsBravo says: 04/22/2007	My boyfriend is Colombian American. I have a difficult time communicating with his family. Though I learned spanish in school, I didn't ever pick it up to the point to be conversational. I know words and short statements from Spanish 101.

Yo, tambien. Aprendi todo mi espanol en la escuela primaria. It took me a while to put that sentence together in Spanish (couldn't insert the proper punctuation, but I know what it should be). One of my goals is to spend at least 4 weeks immersed in a Spanish-speaking country. That way I would have to speak the language to survive. I've tried the audio and video courses. It's embarrasing to try out my language skills with the Mexican Americans here in Texas, because I know I sound like a child...I don't know how to use past tense verbs, for goodness' sake! But I've been assured that if I were in a situation where I had to use the language, Spanish speakers could understand my attempts, and I could develop my skills. Now, to find 4 weeks to spend in Mexico!....
