Thanks susiew for the tip on the contest.
I will be in Tuscany later this year regardless of the contest results.
I am also going on a 12 day cruise from Rome.
This has been a life long dream for me and I am now in a position to make it happen.
ciao

I fulfilled my life Dream of going to Italy the first time last November. I did part of the trip with Doumina Whyman (www.theenthusiastictraveler.com) and I HIGHLY recommend her! It was an intimate experience with the most special moments that I could never have had with a larger tour group or by myself. I did some by myself and I am so glad I did! The area of my trip was mainly Tuscany and some Umbria. I flew in/out of Florence and only got 2 days there, I recommend at least 3. My base was a farm (an agriturismo) outside of Cortona (which I LOVE)... the farm is Parco Fiorito, and is owned by renowned chef and cookbook author Roberto Russo. I will be going back and seeing more of Italy, since I know my soul is from there! Go any way that you can, but do go!

PERSONAL EATING EXPERIENCE:

A network of nonprofessional chefs host dinners in their homes as a cultural culinary exchange with other members of "Staseranonesco" which means "tonight I'm staying home" in Italian.

It costs $50 to join www.staseranonesco.net
(English - http://www.staseranonesco.net/Eng_Pag/Idea.htm )

I haven't done this but read about it in United's in flight magazine. Fun!

FOR LODGING:
Agriturismos are an interesting adventure where you stay in the countryside. Check out this site: http://www.agriturismo.it/enindex.asp

I did this on a lemon orchard in Sicily and it was really cool.

1. Consider a cruise. You get to see lots of places from the comfort of a ship. No constant unpacking/re-packing and hefting luggage.
2. Find a friend or relative that you can live with in a tiny cabin for 10-21 days. Even better, go with a whole group.

Every Fall the Slow Food organization, which is based in Italy, has a huge event in Turin related to food artisans. In 2006 they will have the Salone del Gusto, where the public can browse through hundreds of small food producer booths and sample the wares. On the other year - what I want to do - is go to a huge Cheese event.
So if you`re going to Italy this year consider tying in the trip with the Salone del Gusto, if you`re into good food! http://www.slowfood.com/ :)

I went on a memorable cruise to Italy and France with my friend just a few weeks after 9-11. Probably half the ship had canceled their reservations, but we went and had a great time. We`ll always remember our adventures of taking the wrong train in Livorno, wandering through Venice, and braving the Naples bus system.
