November 1 is the start of NaNoWriMo! Sharpen those fingertips, brew the coffee, and get started on your 50K word novel. Sign up at http://www.nanowrimo.org and you'll join local groups to motivate you. Have fun!

I finished! It seems meant to be, the way it flowed and I stayed motivated. However in the process I discovered these great side effects which reminded me of training for a charity marathon.

Why write a novel (especially in 30 days?)

5. It gives you a good excuse to walk up to cops - or other experts - and say excuse me I'm writing a novel and could you tell me...

Talk about a built in pickup line!

4. An excuse to drink lots of coffee

3. An excuse to get out of social engagements (gotta go work on my novel!)

2. A new twisted way to look at reality.

"That guy would be a good character. What she said would fit in as dialogue" etc.

Now I see how and why TV writers I've known are always alert to what's around them.

1. You'll have written a novel!!

If you gave up on writing a novel this year you can still be a winner, with only 6 words.
