I also highly recommend Stitch n Bitch. It's how I learned to knit. The website www.knittinghelp.com has videos which also helped if I wasn't clear on what the book was saying.
Knitting is fun and very relaxing. Enjoy learning!

I have a friend who got wool from Freecycle. Couldn't hurt to post a "thread wanted" to make your new habit more affordable!

I actually ended up taking a knitting class at a great place here in NYC called The Point. I had tried to teach myself from a book for a while, but it never worked. Yet another expensive habit!

I second Stitch N'Bitch for being the best knitting book around. It's very informative.

Just pick up the needles and try it. You probably will not get it right the first time, but nobody does. Just remember to loosen up, take some deep breaths, and remember to take it one step at a time! Try something small for your first project, like a scarf or a hat. Knitty.com is awesome for inspiration and free patterns. Stitch N' Bitch is probably the best book around to learn all the techniques. Talk with other knitters, because they all have a bond with each other through this ancient craft. And if you're a guy, you are highly recieved in this community, because knitting is not just for girls. It actually started with monks who spend years becoming masters of the craft.
You can do it! Once you learn, it's like riding a bicycle.

Go to your local Wal-Mart - they have a book called "I Taught Myself How to Knit" - for $12 you get the book plus tools to start you off, including needles. Its a really great way to get started. They also have it for Crocheting.
