As pnoeric says, many people don't leave the country, partially because the United States is so large and varied on it's own. To explore the entire country would take a lifetime. And up until recently, travelling around most of North America did not need a passport. Toronto, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Miami, Anchorage, Mexico City, Yellowstone national park... no passport needed.

Bring extra photos when traveling in case you need visas to visit countries you're going to.
In the US many drugstore chains can take passport photos for you. Walgreens and Riteaid are about $8 for 2 photos. From what I've read Costco is a very cheap option to get many photos for just a few dollars.

I live in th netherlands and even babies heve passports here?
so i don't get it, can someone explain????
