bubbles_suzie,
As pnoeric says, many people don't leave the country, partially because the United States is so large and varied on it's own. To explore the entire country would take a lifetime. And up until recently, travelling around most of North America did not need a passport. Toronto, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Miami, Anchorage, Mexico City, Yellowstone national park... no passport needed.

Leave plenty of time before you need it and make sure you know if countries you're visiting require you to get a visa in advance, which may mean you have to mail in your passport to their consulate before your trip. US passports expire in 10 years.

Bring extra photos when traveling in case you need visas to visit countries you're going to.

In the US many drugstore chains can take passport photos for you. Walgreens and Riteaid are about $8 for 2 photos. From what I've read Costco is a very cheap option to get many photos for just a few dollars.

I had a to get a passport when visiting Jamaica. We didn't need one back in 2003 when we went on the Mexican Riviera on a 7 day cruise, but it's still good to have one. What made me get one was when we planned our first trip out of the country.

bubbles_suzie - here in America a lot of people never leave the country, or they have only gone to Canada or Mexico-- places where (until this year) you did not need a passport to visit. I heard that only 11% of Americans have passports, which is terrible IMHO :-(
