Florianopolis is a very popular place for professional surfing as well as taking surfing lessons. I went off the beaten track to Itacare which is in the state of Bahia in Brazil. My lessons at http://www.easydrop.com were fabulous and very inexpensive. If you like smaller towns and more mellow non-touristy areas, I recommend Itacare. Florianopolis is also fabulous, great beaches, beautiful people, lively towns with great cafes etc.

I just found a cute email I wrote to my sister while I was in Brazil that made me happy all over again about achieving this goal. By the way flying to Brazil, taking the lessons, and lodging cost the same as it would have been to take lessons in California!!

yesterday it was storming a little while we were
surfing. it was just so exciting that i wasn't scared
at all of the waves! i learned to turn a little.

did i tell you there are 2 young girls who will shuck
a small pineapple for you, and then leave a part of
the stem you hold, and slice the pineapple into 4
vertical parts, and then you eat it like an ice cream?
for like $.45!!

last night i had a great dinner in a beautiful
restaurant sitting out back with a Kellerman book I
found, and my favorite brazilian cd came on and i
couldn't believe i was sitting in brazil listening to
it! :)
