It's not entirely necessary to ride end-to-end this way, but defintely more fun. Wait as long as you have to in order to claim that prized spot. Shoot for the front on the left side of the car, so that you can "high 5" folks on passing cable cars. The Hyde and Beach line is like a rollercoaster (it makes all of the good turns and twists) so shoot for that line. Don't be bogged down with bags to carry, otherwise this becomes tricky.
Soooooooo much fun, for so little money! Having done this during the holidays, it was even more fun. Weather wasn't too chilly, so it was quite pleasant. Remember to have a good hold on the railing, so you can wave to passers-by!
