If youre wanting to see a lot of the country, one of the cheapest ways to travel around Aus is to buy a van with a friend, and sell it before you leave. If you look in travellers centers like Byron Bay or Cairns, you can often buy a van from a fellow traveller, complete with camping gear. Remember to bargain hard; these people are leaving the country and eager to sell. And you can then sell for a good price when your turn comes.
If a van sounds like too much to deal with, or time is an issue, consider some of the extremely reasonable domestic flights with Virgin Blue. www.virginblue.com.au
Another way to reduce expenses is to work as a WOOFer. Willing workers on organic farms Some of these arent actually organic farms, but for about 4 hours work a day, you get room and board.
People under 30, I think, are also for a Working Holiday Visa, which allows you to work on a part-time or casual basis.
Have a wonderful trip!!!
