There is a type of therapy available that addresses these types of self destroying thoughts and it's called CBT. If you google it you will find loads of info.
Also I found great help from a book my cousellor recommended me. It's called 'how to accept yourself' by Dr Windy Dryden and it's all about how to re-direct your thought patterns. I couldn't have done it with out this book.
