I just discovered a pirate supply store that sells bottles for putting messages in! I'm not sure how much better they are than any other bottle but here you go: http://www.826valencia.org/store/pirate_supplies_main.html
I also think sending messages in bottles would be a great educational project. I'm sure it's been done, but a very neat way to learn about tides and other cultures.
