You guys are really cool! I'd made contact with a local before my vacation a couple of weeks ago and I was debating where or not to take the class (I'm a full-time mommie/student); but the way you guys are talking about your experiences as a beginner is really making me excited about taking the class...I really have wanted to learn this art. I have an "ear" for music; the ideal about playing a kids' birthday parties sounds cool!

Bought an acoustic through e bay - bit of a bargain to be honest and a quality guitar for the price - and have a couple of self teach books / dvd's which did help. I have signed up for a 10 week evening class locally which has brought me on leaps and bounds - i would definitely recommend you do this as its generally only an hour a week, and for me personally, it all sticks better than from a book!

I've purchased an electric guitar and a tutorial dvd in place of going to a class. I'll give an update on whether that helps or not.

If you don't have time to take a class, buy a guitar and a chord book. It's incredible how easy it is to start learning to strum.

OK aspiring real life guitar heroes - the world's largest jam session of Purple Haze is going to be in San Francisco on October 25, 2009. Anyone at any level of guitar can be in the jam.

Some things that might help when you get bord with it or fall into a slump is to try and write your own song or record the bits you do know and mix them.

That's awesome. I kind of slacked off after a while but want to keep learning. The guitar strap company is a totally cool idea!

I am totally high on learnimg to play the guitar better. A couple of friends and I have gotten together an started a company that
makes custom guitar straps. http://www.italiastraps.com/process.html

I've also signed up for some courses at the local JC in classical guitar to improve my technique without a pick...
My only problem is spending too much time playing guitar :)

I joined a once a week group guitar class. A week after starting I can play Happy Birthday! I am accepting bookings for children`s birthday parties. :) We are also learning a White Stripes song. That way when the kids boo me I can wow them with how cool I am. Seriously, after just a couple of lessons I felt like I can really learn to play decently.

Seeing that today I "jammed" with the teacher playing the blues I felt I could say I've "done" this goal although I plan to continue to keep learning!
