surfing is terrifically fun-- I sucked terribly and still loved doing it every chance I got. :-) what everyone else said-- warm water (and a good wetsuit) will make it a lot nicer. and a beach with sand on the bottom. I learned in Malibu but the best time I had was at a deserted beach near Ensenada, Mexico... incredible.

If you're not already taking yoga or pilates, I highly suggest doing so. I'm sure this was the reason that I had such an easy time of popping up on the board (which I did on my first try on land, and my second try in the water).

I wouldn't suggest a camp where you surf every day unless your upper body is in great shape. I actually had two days between my first and second class, and I'm glad that I did -- I was so sore after the first class that the down time really allowed me to rest (as well as practice popping up at home) before heading back to the ocean.

I learned in Hawaii. I took a 1 day class and was up and standing in an hour.

Be sure to have swim shoes to wear if you are surfing on reefy/rocky beach area. Also make sure to wear skin protection (e.g. skin shirt) and sunscreen.

I took surfing lessons in Brazil. My advice:
1. Plan a trip that's more than a week long.
2. Go somewhere with warm water to make it more pleasant to spend a lot of time in the water.
3. Make sure your teachers have good credentials and safety standards.
4. Get in shape and have fun!

Within the next 3 months I'll have achieved my goal to surf in Bali. (Especially now that I'm saying it here.)

Awesome! I totally loved it. If you're a woman looking for a good place to learn, I highly recommend Surf Diva in La Jolla, CA. (www.surfdiva.com) I think I'm hooked...

My friend changed her career from high tech to starting this sports wear company for women. Here are some stories about women surfers that might be inspiring!
