The Best Reason to Social Network [ December 4th, 2008 ] Posted in » Happiness

When you’re happy, you can start a happiness virus through your social network, according to a Harvard and UC San Diego study.

So update your Twitter and Facebook status with good things and spread the love!

No conclusive info about when you’re down, although I know that’s as good a people repellant as B.O.

Google Wants Your Ideas to Change the World

thinkMany of us have goals to positively affect a billion people’s lives. Now’s our chance!

Google has put out a “a call for ideas to change the world by helping as many people as possible.”

By October 20th, submit your ideas for “Project 10 to the 100th” in a variety of categories including Community, Energy, Education, Shelter and more.

(Not up for this challenge? For one, you can always submit ideas on Global Ideas Bank which has been around for years. And if you’re in the U.S. please make sure to vOte on November 4th for a smart, worldly candidate who believes in freedom and will make the lives of a billion people better.)

Update: How We Brainstormed
I joined 3 great friends for a brainstorm. We set out some appetizers and drinks, then set the ground rules for our unedited brainstorm of how to make the world a better place. Fur flew. Feathers were ruffled. We laughed. We came up with serious ideas, like about reducing overpopulation.

I tossed out an idea to have alcohol gel rub in public places, sponsored by advertisers. Seems extremely simple and very easy to implement. Today I submitted it to the contest. But in the meantime I encourage you to “steal this idea.” Good for the health of people and good for reducing healthcare costs!

Make Someone Happy. It’s As Easy As A B C

Recently I emailed a friend a list of 10 great things about him. I loved his creative response. And as I’ve been smiling for 5 minutes, I wanted to spread this idea today. Send a list of things you appreciate to people you care about. Like this:

S he has a neverending supply of ideas
U nderstands things that I don’t, like business
S miles in a really cute way
I am glad she is one of my best friends
E njoys rattling off funny lyrics to obscure songs that only cool people know

Just a few of your minutes can make someone’s day!

If Magritte Loved Starbucks

not a pipe dudeHow often can you write a blog post about surrealist children’s books only to discover a surreal coffee cup immediately after?

The second I discovered I Am Not a Paper Cup—a Ceramic Coffee Cup with Silicone Lid modeled after the ubiquitous paper coffee cup—well, I had to spread the word.

The product name plays on Magritte’s painting “Ce N’est Pas Un Pipe” which makes you think twice about perception and reality. (Disclaimer: I made that up and have no idea what he wanted you to think.)

Sure there are a lot more functional travel mugs on the market. But this has a distinct coolness factor that makes it a great gift for the eco-conscious coffee addict in your life. It’s dishwasher and microwave safe too.

Embrace Your Inner Surrealist with Art Explorers

claesJust last week I snapped a photo of a Claes Oldenburg statue at a museum. Then today I discovered Make It Pop! by author and artist Joyce Raimondo. And now I can make fuzzy oversized popsicles just like an Oldenburg!

While I likened some of the projects to looking at a Martha Stewart project—where my work likely wouldn’t resemble hers one bit—it’s worth a try. After all, who’s to say what’s art?

This fun creative book series could be just the thing to start you on your art-related life goals. Oh, and maybe your kids will like them too. Hello Dali!
