This Memorial Day (Monday May 26, 2008), enjoy your barbeques. But how about also celebrating life by doing something on your life list? Or actively observing the meaning of this important holiday?
For example…
- Learn the details of a past war, such as World War II, through first hand accounts.
- Read war diaries from the Iraq war
- Help a veteran record memories in the Veteran’s History Project at PBS. Or better yet if you personally know a veteran, video record his or her stories and post it online as a tribute! One of my cherished experiences was interviewing a WW1 veteran who still stuttered from nerve gas.
- Pause at 3 p.m., local time, on Memorial Day in an act of national unity (duration: one minute). The National Moment of Remembrance was established by Congress.
- Look into volunteering to help veterans.
