For years I’d wanted to witness fields and hills blanketed with orange California poppies.
In general I believe you don’t have to accomplish every goal on your list. But finally this year after exclaiming “That’s been on my life list forever,” I did it!
The experience totally surpassed my expectations; I hope this blog post inspires you to review your life list for goals which are important to you but that you may have “avoided” in the past.
Why had I not done this before?
While I wanted to see the flowers, a long list of excuses stopped me:
- It was too much trouble to get off the highway.
- It would probably be too hot.
- Who knew how good the flowers would really be?
And assorted other blah, blah, blah.

The experience wildly surpassed my expectations.
First, it was simple getting there. Then I realized, I’d never researched how close to Highway 5 (the thoroughfare along the US west coast) is to the Antelope Valley California Poppy Preserve.
Second, I chose an optimal time to go: Early morning, before the heat. On a day with few travelers. These choices helped me overcome all my previous “objections.”
And shortly after exiting the freeway I came across beautiful fields, one of them with a RIVER OF POPPIES.
This is one photography expedition I’ll always cherish. Make a goal to photograph the California poppies too, and go for it along with your other Southern California explorations either this April or next year.
So go for your Spring photography goals today. And if what you’re looking for doesn’t appear, carpe the world around you. It’s all beautiful in its own way.
Missed the flowers? Here are my pics!
