Top 15 Mysteries of the Mind and Life

Doing what you want in life is a complicated proposition. You need the mental state to figure out what you want. The tenacity, creativity, and will to do whatever it is.

Live Science’s list of 10 mysteries of the mind didn’t include several life mysterious that I think relate to our minds. And so I present:

5 More Unexplained Mysteries of Life

  1. Fear of making granola
granola“I want to make the granola that’s in the Sunset Magazine,” I told my friend, secretly excited that I finally would be doing something so small that I’d put on my life list two years ago.

“I’ve always wanted to make granola too!” She replied (not purposely quoting the great SuperViva tshirts). We committed together to make it.

Recipes are simply following directions much like house or car repairs. Yet in the back of my mind I wondered:
What if I don’t like the granola.
What if it doesn’t stick together the way I want.
What if I eat it all!

We’ve decided to have a granola-off and make various recipes at once. Make your goals fun.

  2. Synchronicity and coincidence
Why do you bump into people while you’re thinking about them? Or get a job offer as soon as you decide to get a job? Some call it the law of attraction. Whatever it is, this is one mystery I’d like explained. (Here are some of my weird stories.)
  3. Life choices
Why do we do stuff we don’t want to do? We’re of free will after all.

Recently a friend ranted that her college boyfriend’s childhood dream was to have a truck and two dogs named Bubba and Gus. Today he has a big house, several kids, and no truck or dogs. She (a psychologist) thinks he merely got off track and never got back on.

Why does this happen? If I knew that answer I’d be on the talk show circuit. So instead I’ll refer you to Dr. Phil’s 10 Life Laws which are great tools to help you re-condition yourself.

  4. The Car Mechanic Syndrome
How come when you have a car problem and bring it to the shop, the problem goes away?
  5. Color Perception
How do I know that the way I see blue is the way you see it, and that your “blue” isn’t my yellow? Does this explain the way some people dress?

What mysteries of the mind boggle your mind?

5 Easy Things to Do on Earth Day - April 22

walking in laApril 22 is Earth Day, observed each year by more than 500 million people and national governments in 175 countries to promote saving the environment.

Even though Earth Day happens during the work week, it’s still easy to get involved or make a difference. The Earth Day Network organizes events and provides lots of interesting educational resources that schools and parents can use year-round.

  1. When commuting, take public transportation, ride a bike or carpool.
  2. Try eating only locally produced food, or at least some. The food is fresher, supports smaller companies usually, and saves the transportation costs.
  3. Choose products with the least amount of packaging. Bring your own cup to the coffee shop.
  4. Say no to plastic bags. Use a shopping bag instead. Here’s why.
  5. Explore sustainable products which may be alternatives to those you’re using today.

Most important is to get the “reduce, reuse, recycle” mentality into your everyday life while thinking about the choices you make. For example, one store where I shop has recycled paper bags that fall apart. Given that I can’t re-use them, this seems a lot more wasteful and expensive than new bags which I could re-use maybe 4 times. So I don’t use their bags.

If you have goals to help the environment, April 22 is a good time to start. Just like with eating and exercise, once you get in the habit it’s hard to stop!

Kudos to Danica Patrick - First Female IndyCar Winner

danica patrickThey’re models! They’re rockstars! Recently I heard about several women who KICK ASS in their various passions, while leveraging their beauty for publicity and modeling income. While I do not have a career as a model waiting in the wings, their championship attitudes inspire me:

Even for non-race car fanatics, how exciting that Danica Patrick became the first female winner in IndyCar history Sunday, finishing 5.8594 seconds ahead of the next closest contender in the Indy Japan 300.

aninaIn technology, Anina, an international model, is pursuing her passions in mobile (cell phone) technology, as well as being a spokesperson and all around awesome tech weenie.

LeslieAnd in everyday life, I met a young barista, who , a turns out to be not only Miss Rodeo Oregon, model, and a horse breeder. Oh and her dad is a top drag racer.

Let them inspire you to pursue dreams related to races, competitions, and things you want to win.

Add them to your life list. Then GO FOR IT relentlessly.
