Thoughts on Ken Burns “The War” Series

October 2nd, 2007 by Susie

As someone who grew up in America, I often remark, when things seem bad, how lucky most of us are never to have gone through a major war on our own soil. (Unless any Civil War veterans are reading this. :)
The War series by Ken Burns about World War II, brought the horrors, drama, and joys to life unlike any history book or class. To my shock, I even learned I’d never heard of major episodes such as the Battle of Manila.

The War website is a rich resource of information about World War II, whether to teach kids or to learn yourself.

Know WWII Veterans?
If you have the chance to hear their stories, here are suggested interviewing techniques. PBS is also collecting World War II stories from anyone who has them.

The series reminded me of a World War I veteran I had the luck to interview while in high school. (I put that as a memory on my life list!)

Don’t miss this great story about a young newspaper boy

Thank you to all the heroes who fought!
