The Best Reason to Social Network [ December 4th, 2008 ] Posted in » Happiness

When you’re happy, you can start a happiness virus through your social network, according to a Harvard and UC San Diego study.

So update your Twitter and Facebook status with good things and spread the love!

No conclusive info about when you’re down, although I know that’s as good a people repellant as B.O.

Interesting Project: Couples counseling before you need couples counseling

I heard about this brillian program on NPR: "Promoting Marriage to Reduce Poverty."

"…couples completed a five-month class in how to be a couple — how to build a life together.  None of them is married yet, but they all have children."

It’s nice to see "The federal government is funding programs like this across the country." Imagine the decline in wrong marriages that shouldn’t be and increase in successful marriages. I hope this concept extends to people of all socioeconomic statuses as well.

It’s interesting to think that you need a license to get married, a license to drive, a license to practice certain professions. But you don’t need a license to have children which is perhaps the most important thing you need to be good at. I’m excited about this program and the positive effects it will have on so many people.

How to track your peak experiences with SuperViva

Lately I’ve been a slacker in terms of journaling memorable things, good days, or dreams.

Yesterday I had a particularly good day, in fact I called it a perfect day. I thought about writing it down in a paper journal then came to terms with the fact that I might not re-read the entry for years. Then I thought about writing it in a private blog.

Then it finally occured to me that SuperViva might be just what I was wanting* - to be able to see the trends in what makes a day or experience great.

*Imagine that (ha ha).

Whenever I have a peak experience or even a peak day, I could add my memories
as a "past" goal in SuperViva then add notes about it as a journal. For example I’ve realized that being at music events surrounded by raving fans makes me very very happy, whether it is an old punk show, the carnaval in Brazil, or a CSNY concert.

How I am tracking my peak experiences (see definition below)

I like how my experiment turned out. I’ll explain along with some visuals and see if SuperViva might be useful for you to track peak experiences in addition to your other memories and accomplishments.

1. I made a new "goal" titled PEAK DAY along with a little detail so I could easily see the gist of this entry.

Then I selected to mark it Private, added the date and picked "5" which I use as meaning extremely satisfying.

2. I jot down notes of the great things that happened to make this a peak day.

Toward the bottom of the "add a goal" form you can include various planning information for your goals. Here I only need to add Personal Notes. So I jot down a few of the things that made this such a great day.

Of course I could add some of these as separate "line items" on my list of things I’ve done. But I kind of felt that by themselves they weren’t so exciting. It was the fact that so many good things happened in one day that made this day so very swell.

I can group together my peak days at any time like this, on My List:

3. Voila - my life list offers an effortless way to review what my peak days have been. And over time I can see the trend of what my most thrilling, fulfilling or enlightening experiences have been.

On my list of things I’ve done, I can resort by clicking the column headings. I can click the Peak Experiences group and all of the "PEAK" goals will be shown together.

Learn more about grouping goals together.

Peak experience is a term used to describe certain extra-personal and ecstatic states, particularly ones tinged with themes of unification, harmonization and interconnectedness. Participants characterize these experiences, and the revelations imparted therein, as possessing an ineffably mystical (or overtly religious) quality or essence. (from Wikipedia)

Secret Low Airfare Deals Websites

You know when the supermarket mis-prices something and you have the once in a life time chance to get a box of CheezIts for $.05? Well the Wall Street Journal had an article about some new websites and communities where you can compare fares and find deals you might not hear about on other sites:

  • Farecompare.com - This one is easy and pretty fun to search for low fares.
  • Airfarewatchdog.com - "Unusually low" fares
  • Farealert.net - Get email alerts about unusual rates which may be typos that the airlines or hotels will honor.
  • Flyertalk.com - Where people addicted to frequent flyer miles commune in forums as well as sometimes in person!
  • Freetraveling.com - Deals mostly in hotel pricing errors

New Study: Men are like chocolate, Women are like peanut butter

Or something like that.

I just read an article about some fascinating findings discussed in a new book, "The Female Brain," by UCSF neuropsychiatrist Louann Brizendine.

  • "…the female brain naturally releases oxytocin after a
20-second hug. The embrace bonds the huggers and triggers the brain’s trust
circuits. So Brizendine advises, don’t let a guy hug you unless you plan to
    trust him
    ."

Could you really stand to hug someone you didn’t trust for 20 seconds?

  • "Connecting through talking activates the pleasure centers in a girl’s brain."

Which explains excessive telephone calling, text messaging, or for you old folks throwing paper footballs in class. (Is that an obsolete communication mechanism?)

  • My favorite factoid is "Women remember fights that a man insists never happened."

    I’m glad I’m not crazy. I guess I’m just a woman.
