The Best Reason to Social Network [ December 4th, 2008 ] Posted in » Happiness

When you’re happy, you can start a happiness virus through your social network, according to a Harvard and UC San Diego study.

So update your Twitter and Facebook status with good things and spread the love!

No conclusive info about when you’re down, although I know that’s as good a people repellant as B.O.

Planning your summer vacation (and maybe a career change)?

Vocation Vacations is a service that lets you do both at once. It’s just what it sounds like - the chance to try your dream career as part of your vacation. How neat is that?

Don’t just watch someone making cheese - try it out yourself. Maybe your "I’ve always wanted to" will become a "not for me" but this is a great no risk way to find out!

Authentic Happiness Quizzes and Research Projects from Upenn

AuthenticHappiness.com is the hub for the University of Pennsylvania Positive Psychology program’s website. If you’re into thinking about what makes us happy, you’ll love it. The site is a playground of self-evaluation quizzes like:

  • Authentic Happiness Inventory - Measures Overall Happiness
  • CES-D Questionnaire - Measure Depression Symptoms
  • Fordyce Emotions Questionnaire - Measures Current Happiness
  • General Happiness Scale - Assesses Enduring Happiness
  • PANAS Questionnaire - Measures Positive and Negative Affect

I enjoyed the 18-question Approaches to Happiness Questionnaire too although after answering all the questions in a certain way I kind of knew how I’d score. ("Life is too short to postpone the pleasures it can provide." - YES!)

Goal-Orientation Research Study

The Positive Psychology Center’s Grit Study is now open for participants, which is perfect for anyone who’s made a list on SuperViva. Here’s the deal:

Grit is a particular orientation to long-term goals. In this 10-minute
study, you can help us understand how grit relates to other personality
traits such as extraversion and openness to experience. You can also
help us understand whether our own self-evaluation of grit and related
traits corresponds to the perceptions of our friends and family
members. Do we see ourselves as others see us? All participants will be
emailed a summary of our research findings upon completion of this
study.

Have fun!

Success Story: SuperViva Member Trades Depression for a Life List

“I’d like to tell you how much I love SuperViva and how much it has helped me. I suffer from severe depression, which I have for 6 years, and most recently public panic disorder. This has made leaving the house and doing things I enjoy almost as impossible as visiting the Antarctic. Since finding SuperViva I have found it easier to get up and motivated in a morning, I am always unsure what the day will bring but you can guarantee it is fun and productive. I have managed to stay off antidepressants and feel like I have made the most progress towards recovery in the entire 6 years.

“Since joining I have created 4 websites, put the initial steps into starting a home business, started a community newsletter and enrolled on that life coaching course I’ve always wanted to do! I don’t really know why SuperViva helps. I guess that having it written down in one place where I can access from anywhere and it won’t get lost / forgotten about / drawn on by the kids, means I visit it throughout the day and it is always in my mind. I also love how it makes you realise all the great things you already have achieved in life such as swim with dolphins and get married and have children.”

“Although I feel like at the moment I really need to concentrate on those types of goals that help you discover yourself, eventually I’d like to use SuperViva to help me realise much bigger dreams and maybe I will visit the Antarctic!”

Find Meaning in Your Life With the SuperViva Idea Search

I’m thrilled about a new feature on SuperViva - the Idea Search.

It’s our idea search engine that lets you quickly find ideas of things to do based on your interests. For example, many SuperViva members are into stuff having to do with motorcycles.

When you sign in you’ll see what’s on your list and what you can add with 1 click.
Have fun with it and let me know any thoughts or questions!

Now I’m off to marathon in Alaska! (Technically 1/2 marathon but who’s counting. Besides me, that is.)
