The Best Reason to Social Network [ December 4th, 2008 ] Posted in » Happiness

When you’re happy, you can start a happiness virus through your social network, according to a Harvard and UC San Diego study.

So update your Twitter and Facebook status with good things and spread the love!

No conclusive info about when you’re down, although I know that’s as good a people repellant as B.O.

Psychogeography - You learn something new every day

The nice thing about the Internet is you never know where it will take you.

Today I ventured upon Glowlab.com where not only did I discover LED Throwies (magnetic graffiti lights) but I also learned about Conflux 2006, "the annual New York City festival where visual and sound
artists, writers, urban adventurers, researchers and the public
gather for four days to explore the physical and psychological
landscape of the city."

In a nutshell, the festival relates to a concept called "psychogeography, which I’d never heard of.  The actual definition of this area a little hard to digest beyond it being "The study of specific effects of the geographical environment,
consciously organised or not, on the emotions and behaviour of
individuals."

Perhaps a good example is the ire raised by the signage in the Washington DC beltway area, which causes DC and Maryland residents to hestitate to venture into Virginia lest they get irreparably lost and frustrated, something I experienced many times during my tenure there.

Due to an early obsession with SimCity and current obsession with wayfinding and signage, I have a feeling psychogeography will become a new obsession. It’s now on the list anyway!

Fast forward several hours and a coffee later
Lo and behold my first experiment with LED-based urban graffiti:

Getting the Things Done You Want To Do

For the umpteempth time today someone raved about the book Getting Things Done : The Art of Stress-Free Productivity.

I’ve been remiss in reading it myself. But it gets my attention when a book has "evangelists" who rave about how it changed their lives in terms of efficiently using their time to accomplish their goals.

I asked him if he had a life goals list. He started by saying he read this book which helped in figure out various spiritual and work goals. Getting Things Done has trained him to efficiently fill in his "blank" time in productive ways. For example, he said, if his family is gone for the afternoon and he has 30 minutes free he might try a new meditation practice.

He seemed to exude a sense of calm by knowing how to organize his time. I rushed off to buy the book, and you may want to too!

Furry Lobsters and Rat-Squirrels, Oh My!

This week the furry lobster discovery topped big science news, nearly trumped by the rat-squirrel. It goes to show there is so much to be discovered.

In case you missed the recent SuperViva newsletter, I thought you’d enjoy this compendium of ideas that intertwine rare animal adventures with travel. Who knows, it could lead to you discovering a snufalumpagus!

Think Outside the Dolphin

You may want to swim with dolphins. But envision
the tales you’ll have after riding a camel, an
ostrich,
and an elephant

And jovigirl’s
goal to hear a wolf
howl in the wild
just makes me
shiver.

Holiday
wants to see
gorillas in the wild
while for years I’ve
yearned to
photograph
polar bears in Canada
. Recent news
discussed how the warmer climate is wreaking
havoc on polar bear habitats. Both this and the
issues wild gorillas face are good reminders
to go for your goals - not only because we age but
because many things go away as well!

These animal goals combine perfectly with goals
to travel to Egypt
(very popular), Australia,
and India.
The wolf?
Maybe as close as Montana while at Yellowstone!

Tip: Group related goals into lists.
See
how
.
