The Best Reason to Social Network [ December 4th, 2008 ] Posted in » Happiness

When you’re happy, you can start a happiness virus through your social network, according to a Harvard and UC San Diego study.

So update your Twitter and Facebook status with good things and spread the love!

No conclusive info about when you’re down, although I know that’s as good a people repellant as B.O.

No one on their deathbed says “I wish I’d worked harder.”

Today I read a serious example of this. Gene O’Kelly, the CEO of KPMG, at 52 found out he had terminal brain cancer and only a few months to live. It was true and he did die in September 2005.

Unlike Queen Latifah in Last Holiday who ditched her secure existence to live her dream life, he came to terms with having lived a life that was too driven and focused on business. There’s always the question of what you’re going to leave when you die. He decided to write a memoir.

In Chasing Daylight: How My Forthcoming Death Transformed My Life he says "Had I known then what I know now, almost certainly I would have been more creative in figuring out a way to live a more balanced life, to spend more time with my family." At least he had time to re-connect and have closure with old friends and acquaintences.

But if you are hesitating to really think about what you want your life to be made of, do it now. You never know and to use my favorite quote: "It’s better to regret something you have done than something you haven’t!"

Carpe vida.

Success Story: SuperViva Member Rediscovers Herself

“I have always been a list person. I make lists for everything. SuperViva allows me to share with others what I would like to do as well as what I have already done. Plus, it allows you to find other ideas out there that may have slipped your mind. I have accomplished some of the things I put on my list since signing up for SuperViva. Actually, two weekends ago I was able to accomplish two things on my list that have been nagging at me forever: I rode a motorcycle for the first time and shopped at IKEA! Those might seem like small goals, but it’s usually the little things that make life exciting.

Your site came at a wonderful time in my life, timing couldn’t have been better. I recently broke up with my fiance of 3 years. While I was in the relationship, I allowed myself to push my goals on a back burner because I would rather spend time with him than pursue my goals. Since then, I have really evaluated where I would like to go in life, what I have to contribute, and the things I want to do and see. SuperViva has helped me accomplish this by allowing me to organize these goals into one spot and make me feel great when I do accomplish a goal.”

Combining many goals into 1 activity: Alaska marathon

I am sure I’m typical of someone with a life list: I didn’t even remember that I already had a goal to run in the Alaska Team in Training marathon to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma society. But today I signed up. I went to SuperViva and started adding the goal to my list then realized it was there! Duh. I guess subconsciously I was making it happen by having written it down previously.

Anyway the groovy thing is I will hopefully achieve my goals to:

1) see the aurora borealis
2) lose 20 pounds

I told the team mentor today that I’m going to resist doing the "oh I’m training so I can eat more" schtick which I did when I ran the AIDS marathon and which is very tempting to do! Gotta pasta load. Gotta bagel load! :)
